Paddle with the Pros Series
New for the 2008 paddling season is our "Paddle with the Pros" instructional programs. We have a line up of great, internationally acclaimed instructors. Each of the following courses are taught in small groups with emphasis on skill building, group dynamics and paddler safety.
- Intermediate Rescues and Towing - May 11, 2008
- Rob Avery, ACA/BCU Kayak Coach
- It's time to take those rescue techniques to the world of cold water, wind and current (real world stuff.) This class is geared to people who have learned rescue techniques in protected environments such as lakes and swimming pools, and are now ready to put them to work in conditions where you will realistically need them. This class is taught in a fun playful manner while getting these life saving skills fine tuned:
- towing techniques
- group management in challenging circumstances
- deal with seasick and incapacitated paddlers
- Full Day Course: $125
- Location: Freshwater Bay
- Surf Zone Safety - May 23, 2008
- Rob Avery & Sean Morley, 2007 World Masters Surf Kayak Champion
- This class is geared towards beginners, who are interested in learning how to maneuver their kayak safely in and out of surf zone areas. This is an essential course for anyone who lands and launches in areas of wave action. Learn:
- how to evaluate conditions including waves, rips, wave sets, and wind
- timing, safety, and communication techniques in the surf
- etiquette and how or how not to help others in the surf
- suitable bracing techniques
- Time for this class is "To Be Announced" due to surf conditions on the day of class.

- Intermediate Surf Zone - May 25, 2008
- Rob Avery & Sean Morley, 2007 World Masters Surf Kayak Champion
- Rob and Sean will teach you the ins and outs of wave dynamics and how to utilize them to make surfing your kayak even more fun. Learn how to:
- ride the waves with confidence and finesse
- to analyze and utilize the power of waves to initiate more advanced moves and tricks
- An Eskimo Roll is required for this class.
- Half Day Course: $69
- Location: Hobuck Beach
Summer '08 Surf Series
Surf Series '08 will involve three separate surf specific coaching sessions with Gary Korb. Begin and fine tune your surfing skills by joining all three classes or hopping into the session suitable to your level of kayaking. Rental kayaks and equipment are available upon request. Reservations required and class size is limited.
- The Basics - July 19, 2008
- Join us and discover the joys of kayak surfing. In this session we will begin with basic body mechanics and how they apply to edge control. Then we'll move on to using the paddle and boat together to achieve control & speed. We will also cover:
- wave shape and selection
- understanding rips and how to benefit from them
- defensive strategies for big surf to try and avoid injury
- surf etiquette-who has right-of-way and how to get along at a crowded surfing spot
- self rescue in the surf zone
- $69 per person. An eskimo roll will make this class more enjoyable but is not required. We will meet at ATK. Class held at Crescent Beach.
- Intermediate - August 23, 2008
- In this session we will begin to refine our surfing. Our main focus will be on wave shape and selection. This is the key to getting longer rides and putting yourself in position to hit more advanced moves. Moves we will cover and attempt:
- bottom turns
- roundhose cutbacks
- flat spins
- back surfing
- $69 per person. Wave conditions will dictate what moves we'll be attempting. An Eskimo roll is recommended but not required. We will meet at ATK. Class held at Crescent Beach or Hobuck.
- Advanced - August 23, 2008
- In this session we will begin to refine our surfing. Our main focus will be on wave shape and selection. This is the key to getting longer rides and putting yourself in position to hit more advanced moves. Moves we will cover and attempt:
- blunt cutbacks
- spins
- backsurfing into backstabs (back blunts)
- cartwheels
- lip moves
- wave wheels
- $69 per person.Wave conditions usually dictate what moves we'll be trying. Small steep waves are best for lip moves and blunts, and big soft waves are more conducive to spins and backsurfing. An Eskimo roll is required for this session. We will meet at ATK. Class held at Crescent Beach or Hobuck.
Regular Classes
- Introductory White Water

- Gary Korb, pro paddler and kayak designer, dates June 28-29
- We offer a 2 day Introductory White Water kayaking Course. This will be taught on the Elwha River and at Crescent Beach. We are now registering for classes. Space is limited and this weekend course is $150. Rentals are available. Please call or contact us to sign-up or for more information!
- Intermediate White Water

- This class is for those who have mastered the basics and want to try stepping up their skills to the next level. This is a one day course on the Sol Duc river. Please contact us or call for more information and reservations.
- Eskimo Roll

- March 28-29, instructor Lisa Markli and Chris Duff
- May 10- 11, instructor Rob Avery and Larry Little
- Enjoy an introduction to a valuable kayaking skill - how to Eskimo Roll a kayak. These classes are held year round, so call for information or sign up anytime you're ready - class is only $65 per/hr for private instruction or $130/person for 2 hour group class. When you 'get immersed', you'll be ahead of the game and your confidence will soar!
