Hypothermia Protection: Paddling in the NW, where saltwater temperatures may rise to a frigid 55 degrees makes for a serious decision when purchasing hypothermia protection. A drysuit or wetsuit/drytop combination are preferred methods to keep yourself warm and comfortable while on the water. Again, trying both options and finding hypothermia protection to fit your budget may very well be a life saver.

Personal Flotation Devices: Stay afloat with a PFD made specifically for kayaking. The PFD's we carry are made to be comfortable while seated and provide flotation that is US Coast Guard certified. When trying on PFD's be sure to sit in a kayak. If the PFD is rising up to your chin, chaffing under your arm or uncomfortable, try another one on. Keep trying them until you've got the right one for your body and kayak type. We are recommended dealers for Stohlquist Waterware, Extrasport PFDs and Astral Buoyancy.

Footwear / Handwear: This may be surprising, but foot injuries are one of the most common injuries in kayaking. Usually not while kayaking, but when getting out of the boat, stepping on sharp obstacles such as barnacle or mussel shells, or twisting an ankle when getting onto an uneven ground such as the beach. Also feet and hands usually get the coldest the fastest, so get a good pair of neoprene boots and gloves or pogies for keeping your hands warm.
